Terminology is often treated as a linguistic nuance. In practice, it is structural. Terms define processes, responsibilities, and patterns of action. Once they are used inconsistently, uncertainty starts to creep in rather than showing up as an obvious defect.

In e-learning, terminology is part of the system architecture. It connects content, user interfaces, documentation, and real workflows.

Why this is critical: in many organizations these are distinct categories (for example in ITIL or compliance). A „Störung“ (malfunction) may follow a different reporting path than a „Vorfall“ (incident).

How terminology drift occurs

Terminology drift rarely happens because someone “made a mistake”. It happens because nobody is steering it.

Several translators work in parallel. Everyone delivers correct results. But without binding terminology guidance, terms are interpreted and used differently.

AI translation systems optimize locally. They make decisions at sentence or text level, not at system level.

Without explicit terminology guidance, AI cannot know which terms must be used identically across modules, languages, or systems.

Consistency is not an emergent property. It is a governance task.

It has to be clear which terms are binding, who defines them, and how changes are communicated. Without this clarity, friction losses appear that never show up directly in translation budgets.

Why this is critical: “must” expresses obligation. “should” is a recommendation. Grammatically everything is fine, but the governance behind it collapses.

Quick check: is terminology governance or coincidence in your organization?

If you cannot name the terms that must be identical in every course (roles, buttons, process names), then terminology is not being actively governed. In that case, AI translation will inevitably produce drift.
